                                                    PEACE OFFICER

                                                    By Michael Bumcrot

I retired in January after 34 years on the dept.,
the last 22 years working homicide. One of the last
BIG cases that I worked was the Sgt. George Arthur
murder that occurred in 1985 but wasn't solved until 1999.
Since the case was solved, I have been contacted by several
writers wanting to write a book about George on the dept.
as well as his murder and the subsequent investigations.
I stopped talking to the writers when I found out that
they all wanted to point fingers at certain people and
certain police agencies and turn the story into a soap opera.
A few months ago, I was approached by a writer named
Mark Watkins, the son of retired homicide Sgt. Davey Watkins.
Marks heart is in the right place and he has given
me the final say on anything that does or does not go
into the book.  Someone has suggested that the book be
written not only about George, but the swan song of Fpk
as well. So we are looking for funny or serious stories
about George and any recollections of the night in the
B of A parking lot when George and Mike Waters were injured.
Or if anyone has any stories about Ted Kirby, Georges killer,
who worked ELA, HOJJ, and CJ.  As you can imagine, Kirby’s
family is unco-op.
