Man Who Drove Into Deputy Fatally Shot

Sheriff's deputies investigating a report of a stolen car in South Los Angeles fatally shot the driver after he drove into one of the deputies, according to authorities. A second man in the car was shot twice in the upper torso and hospitalized in critical condition, Deputy Ron Bottomley said. Four deputies had been patrolling in the 1100 block of East 58th Street when they were flagged down at 12:30 a.m. and told that a Kia Spectra had just been stolen, Bottomley said. The deputies saw a Kia parked nearby with two men inside. As the deputies approached, the driver accelerated toward them, striking one of the deputies, who rolled onto and then off the hood, Bottomley said. When the driver again turned the car toward the deputy, all four officers opened fire, authorities said. The car crashed into another vehicle across the street before backing up and crashing again, authorities said. The driver, Macario Martinez, 20, was shot in the upper torso and was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger's name was withheld. The incident is being investigated by the sheriff's homicide bureau.
Police Dog Dies in Line of Duty

WILLOWBROOK -- A police dog working with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has been shot and killed. It happened about 9:30 p.m. (PDT) Monday. Deputies were called to 126th and Mona streets. They were responding to a call about a man with a gun when the canine was shot. The wounded dog was airlifted to a local animal hospital but later died. It's unclear if the suspect was arrested.

The K-9 killed last night was handled by an ex FPK dep., who was then named Aziz Oukhie. He changed his name a few years ago to Glen Emery. The dog killed, named "Marko" had been handled by Glen for 6
years. Marko was one of the best dogs in our K-9 unit and has numerous outstanding apprehensions and no doubt saved many deputy lives.

Suspect in stolen L.A. patrol car shot in San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- Police chased and shot a 26-year-old man suspected of stealing a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department patrol car early Christmas morning.
The suspect, Regino Aguilar, was taken to a hospital with wounds that were not considered life-threatening. He will be booked into county jail on suspicion of auto theft, felony evading and assault, according to Lt. Kevin Rooney of the San Diego Police Department homicide squad.
Aguilar allegedly stole the black-and-white vehicle from 7901 Compton Ave. in an unincorporated part of Los Angeles County about 7 a.m. At 8:39 a.m., he allegedly stopped at a gas station in Leucadia in northern San Diego County.
A local citizen, apparently finding it unusual that a marked Los Angeles County sheriff's vehicle was far from Los Angeles, called the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. Minutes later, a second caller reported the vehicle weaving southbound on Interstate 5.
A third caller later reported that the car was unoccupied in an area south of downtown San Diego. When a California Highway Patrol officer approached the car, Aguilar jumped back in the vehicle, ran several red lights and drove onto Interstate 5, again southbound toward Mexico, police said.
CHP officers and San Diego police were chasing the suspect on Interstate 5 when Aguilar stopped the car in the median and suddenly jumped out.
When officers demanded that Aguilar surrender, he reportedly returned to the stolen vehicle and "began to pull on a shotgun secured between the front seats," Rooney said.
A CHP officer and a San Diego officer fired at Aguilar, Rooney said.
The CHP officer is a nine-year veteran; the San Diego officer has been with the department for two years. Neither of their names was released.
The investigation is continuing.
